San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa ruffled more than a few feathers when he crashed NBC Sports’ postgame interview with quarterback Brock Purdy while wearing a white hat with the caption “Make American Great Again” printed across the front.
Many fans took Bosa’s actions to be a seeming endorsement of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, who used that phrase while running for president in 2016. Bosa is a known supporter of Trump. The 27-year-old pass-rusher is subject to potential punishment from the NFL in the form of an $11,255 fine for violating Rule 5, Article 4, Section 8 of the NFL rule book regarding “wearing, displaying, or otherwise conveying personal messages… which relate to political activities or causes.”
A minimal fine is likely of little consequence to Bosa, who’s come under fire from several social groups and high-profile people in NFL circles. One politician is taking things even further, demanding the 49ers take more serious action toward their star edge-rusher. “I hope (49ers CEO) @JedYork trades Nick Bosa to Mar-A-Lago,” wrote Robert Rivas, Democratic speaker of the 29th District of the California State Assembly. “As a lifelong @49ers fan, I can say I’ve seen enough of Bosa in California.”
While Bosa is unlikely to be suspended over the issue, a fine is likely in his future. The former No. 2 overall pick decline to comment further about why he busted out his hat after a 30-24 win over the Dallas Cowboys on “Sunday Night Football,” only offering a cryptic reason for his actions. “I’m not going to talk too much about it, but I think it’s an important time,” Bosa told reporters during his postgame media availability.
