Pittsburgh Steelers’ offense gets huge boost with return of Swiss Army Knife running back

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers welcomed running back Cordarrelle Patterson back to practice on Wednesday after the Steelers’ running back was seen going through drills with the team during Wednesday’s individual drills.

Patterson had missed the last three weeks with an ankle injury suffered against the Indianapolis Colts. Head coach Mike Tomlin said that Patterson would practice this week and had a chance to return against the New York Giants. If he does play, that would mean the Steelers would have their entire running back room healthy after Jaylen Warren and Patterson each missed multiple weeks with injuries.

Patterson had an impressive game against the Colts before exiting with the injury. His familiarity with Arthur Smith’s scheme should allow him to maintain a role even with the backfield fully healthy on Monday and moving forward. In addition, Patterson will bring the kick return element back to the Steelers, who have lacked any sort of spark in their kick return game.

Patterson signed a two-year deal with the Steelers this offseason, following Smith from the Atlanta Falcons. His inclusion into the room gives the Steelers three legitimate running backs on the team.
