BREAKING: “Why Are Cowboys Fans Unimpressed by Dalvin Cook’s Big News?”

In 2023, the Dallas Cowboys averaged 112.9 rushing yards per game, good for 14th in the NFL. Running back Tony Pollard had his second-straight 1,000-yard season for Dallas, posting 1,005 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns while averaging 4.0 yards per carry. Jerry Jones, however, deemed Pollard too expensive to keep and allowed him to walk in free agency.

Everything Jones and the Cowboys did (or did not do) to address the running back position since then has been an unmitigated disaster. Now, Dallas is averaging 77.2 rushing yards per game, the worst mark in the NFL.

It’s a situation that many fans could see coming based on the decisions the front office made in the offseason.

The Dallas Cowboys Have the Worst Running Back Room in the NFL

Dallas Cowboys, Ezekiel Elliott
Sep 8, 2024; Cleveland, Ohio, USA; Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott (15) runs back to the locker room following the game against the Cleveland Browns at Huntington Bank Field. MandatoryThe free agent every fan wanted Dallas to sign in order to replace Pollard was Derrick Henry. However, Jones decided that he, too, was out of his price range. Instead, he brought back Ezekiel Elliott, who spent last season with the New England Patriots.

Henry, meanwhile, signed a cheap two-year $16 million contract with the Baltimore Ravens. He currently leads the NFL in rushing yards (873), rushing touchdowns (eight), yards per attempt (6.5), and rushing yards per game (124.7).

As a team, Dallas has 463 rushing yards. In other words, Henry has nearly doubled the Cowboys’ running efforts just by himself.

Dallas’ run game is led by Rico Dowdle, who has 246 yards (4.2 per carry) in six games this season. Elliott has 115 rushing yards and is averaging a woeful 3.0 yards per carry. He does have one touchdown this season, one of just two rushing scores the Cowboys have this year (Dak Prescott has the other).

The Dallas Cowboys Have Elevated Dalvin Cook from Their Practice Squad

Dallas Cowboys, Dalvin Cook
Dec 17, 2023; Miami Gardens, Florida, USA; New York Jets running back Dalvin Cook (33) rushes with the ball against the Miami Dolphins during the first half at Hard Rock Stadium. MandatoryEarlier this season, the Cowboys signed four-time Pro Bowl running back Dalvin Cook to their practice squad. Because he was not on the team for training camp or the preseason, Dallas decided to ramp him up slowly as opposed to playing him right away.

This weekend, Dallas announced that Cook will be making his season debut for the team against the San Francisco 49ers. Fans, however, are so disappointed by the Cowboys run game this year that even this news is underwhelming:

At 3-3, Dallas needs to start putting together some wins. The 49ers are banged up and their defense is allowing, ironically, 112.9 rushing yards per season, the same number the Cowboys’ offense averaged last year.

Perhaps Cook will help, but it does not sound like fans are too optimistic that he will.
