Quarterback Patrick Mahomes gave Kansas City Chiefs fans quite a scare early in the fourth quarter of Monday’s 30-24 overtime win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when he left momentarily after suffering a non-contact injury. The 29-year-old was sidelined but for a few moments though as he came back onto the field for the Chiefs’ next drive after a three-and-out by the Bucs. Mahomes was helped to the sideline by the Chiefs’ training staff after collapsing to the ground seconds after throwing his second touchdown of the game. The two-time NFL MVP pulled up as he lofted a pass to running back Samaje Perine in the end zone, unable to put weight on his left foot after taking an awkward step while scrambling out of the pocket.
Though Mahomes returned to the game, nobody knew quite how severe his injury really was. He put an end to any speculation during a postgame interview with ESPN’s Lisa Salters. “I rolled the ankle,” Mahomes told Salters. “I rolled it last week, and when you roll it again it never feels good. But after I got some time, it started feeling better. We’ve got a short week but we’ll rehab it up and I’ll be ready to go next week.” Mahomes was on Kansas City’s injury report during the week because of the same injury. His mobility didn’t seem to be affected before or after he left the game despite playing on a slick field because of the rain.
The Texas Tech alum finished with 291 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions.
