The entire football world was saddened by the death of a San Francisco 49ers’ player’s daughter, and that player is now away from the team as he prepares for her memorial service.
49ers defensive back Charvarius Ward is in Dallas with family as the team gets set for their game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this week.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan gave the update on Ward during his media availability on Wednesday, and he made it clear that the team would wait as long as they need for his return.
“We’re on his time with that,” the head coach said about the defensive back’s availability. Shanahan also expressed his opinion that the NFL should offer roster exemptions for players who are on bereavement leave.
“It’s tough, everybody handles things differently,” he said, according to The Mercury News.
“You’ve got to be there for someone. There’s no right or wrong way to [mourn].”
Ward announced that his daughter Amani Joy passed away on October 29, dedicating a heartfelt social media post to her.
“She was the best blessing we could have asked for, and her joyous spirit made us smile from ear to ear. She taught us to have patience, trust, and a positive outlook on life. She showed us true strength and bravery,” Ward said about his young daughter.
“She overcame adversity at a young age and was always happy, lighting up every room with her smile. Having the privilege of being her parents and seeing the world through her eyes has changed us for the better.”
Ward’s 49ers teammates have also shown their support during this difficult time for the player and his family.
